Last month I mentioned that I was going to add a new section written by my old colleague George Bijak. George will be making a monthly contribution on Economic observations. His blog will be entitled Bijak’s Macroeconomic Digest. I hope that you find it interesting.

This month George is doing a bit of an introduction. He is looking to entice research analysts to submit links to their papers or research articles. George will filter the articles and provide a link through our newsletter.

US Observation

I haven’t been to the US for a couple of years and it was interesting to see street level activity post Global Financial Crisis. I have, for some time, considered that the US is on the path to recovery although slow. The Dow Jones has popped through 13,000 after being down 20% at one stage last year. This is not the market activity of a weak equity market. There’s more to come. Unemployment is trending down, albeit slowly.

Over the years I have watched the US tackle their problems head on. I grew up in Financial Markets in the 1980’s. This was during the Savings and Loans Market Crisis. America took decisive action. Yes people were hurt along the way, there were unwitting casualties but in the main, the US turned things around.

The same is happening now. It is the global center of innovation. Yes China is a powerhouse but it is the global center of copying everything. Being in the US first hand, restaurants are crowded and there are shoppers in the street. It’s nowhere near the same levels but it is looking buoyant. Cabbies are happier, relatively. As my mate, Grant Cleary, a New Zealand based Wealth Manager, observed, the 405 running the length of Los Angeles is a car park compared with 2009. Americans are back on the roads irrespective of the rising gas prices.

iPad 3 Announcement Later This Week

This edition of the newsletter will miss the iPad 3 launch later this week. But watch for the expected Apple TV 3 announcement. Not the iTV but the little streaming box of which I have been a huge fan since it’s launch some years ago.

For the last couple of years I have been doing the 20 Twenty Challenge. It’s a 20 kilometer walk, 2km ocean swim and 3 km kayak. I just got through last year.

The event is on the 18^th of March.
